Go silly over snow

The first time I saw it snow properly for the first time was in 2007. I was hiking the Annapurna circuit in Nepal and woke up one morning to it gently snowing. To say I got excited was a little of an understatement. I screamed, woke up my friend and half the other residents of the camp-site and proceeded to run outside and skip around like a mad woman. I had been backpacking with a friend through South East Asia before hand, so we had come from months of sunshine and beaches. I had seen snow before that, in the Swiss Alps and Falls Creek, but had never seen it actually snow. Ever since I missed out on the freak snow storm in my hometown when I was a kid, I always desperately wanted this rectified and this was a dream come true.

Another Aussie and me going gaga over the snow. (Note as to my attire - as mentioned above I had been backpacking through South East Asia, so my solution to keep warn in the now freezing conditions was wear almost everything I owned!)

I don't really know what it is. I think it probably has something to do with growing up in Australia in the driest state, in the driest continent in the world. I think if you talk to most Australian's we are fascinated with the stuff. So imagine my excitement when I heard there was snow forecast last night here in Paris. I set my alarm to wake up at 5am when the snow was expected and then proceeded to lay there too excited to sleep.

Yes, crazy.

Then at around 4 am all my insomnia was rewarded with a light snow shower. I stood at the window for a few minutes looking out smiling. Satisfied I got to see the first snow of the season I promptly went back to bed and fell asleep, only to be awoken by the alarm I had set for 5am an hour later. Not to let my prior excited self down, I got my sleep deprived body up and looked out the window again. This time there was snow on the roofs and ground. All very exciting. Too tired to get out my camera, I just grabbed my phone and took a photo of the weather forecast, to prove to myself that I actually saw it snow and the sleep deprivation wasn't in vain.

So after all the excitement and overnight antics I didn't end up waking up again until after midday. When I finally managed to drag myself out of bed to look out the window, I noticed all the snow from hours earlier was gone.

What is it about snow?! Am I the only one in that gets this excited by it?! I'm curious to know!

  1. I think when snow is falling it is the most amazing thing, also the look on the trees, just love that part, cleaning up from it and driving in it, not so much.
