Proud Australian moving to France

Happy Australia Day!!

Sunshine, friends, Triple J's Hottest 100 & a BBQ. What other way can you or would you want to celebrate this day?! It's days like today that I especially love Melbourne. I spent the day with my friend Nessy & some of her friends and I had a great time. It just confirms how much I now feel at home in Melbourne and how much I love living here. So what better time than now, to move to Paris....

Huh?!!

Yes, as I announced in my last very brief blog post, I am moving to Paris. I know it may seem strange to some of you, but it has been a long time coming and I believe that this is the best time in my life to do so.

It has been a dream of mine since I was young to live in a foreign country and learn a new language. Now I am no stranger to living overseas having lived in both the USA and England, but I have always wanted to live somewhere where English was not the first language. About 4 years ago I decided that this place was to be France, or more specifically Paris. I initially decided that I wanted to move to Paris in 2008, however other circumstances meant the timing was wrong and it would just have to remain a dream for the time being.

Now 4 years later, I find myself in Melbourne with a great bunch of friends, a good job & the almost perfect flat. Its taken me just over 2 years to get here, but I feel the happiest I have ever been. I am single, I don't have a mortgage and I am about to turn 30, so what better way to celebrate then to follow my dreams and make the move?!! I don't see France as a permanent move, however a temporary relocation in order to learn French and live overseas one more time before I decide to come back to Australia and truly settle down.

I am excited & nervous at the same time and now I find myself furiously trying to save money, recommencing my french lessons, looking for my perfect Parisian apartment, figuring out where to find work and looking into visas. All whilst recommencing study at uni and trying to train for this marathon. Phew!! It's making me tired thinking about it!!

While I have received a lot of support from Family and Friends, I have had several people question why am I doing it when things are so great here. What do I have to say to them?!

Why not?!!

With a job that will hold my position for up to 12 months, an incredibly supportive family and a great bunch of friends both here in Melbs and around the world. What do I have to lose?!! Not a lot I say, and even if I come back after 3 months, I can say I followed my dreams and lived in Paris and who wouldn't be proud of that?!!

  1. This sounds like an absolute must for you. I commend you for making a decision. I am an Englishman in Melbourne, with a family, and we are considering doing the same the end of next year. There are so many things that tell you that it's a crazy idea - I think the crazy idea is not following what you really want to do. Bon Voyage.

  2. This is so inspiring to me! I am an Aussie (an Adelaideian to be precise) and I am 23. I am currently living in the UK where I have been studying for 6 months, but I leave the UK this week- along with my gorgeous french boyfriend! I am sad to leave him and we are planning to meet in france in July... a long term idea is for me to move to france for a year to learn French. I know hardly any right now haha.
Anyway, this is very cool. Bon Chance!

  3. Hey! Just wondering what job you had and how you managed to line it up before you left for Paris? I'm thinking about moving there next year and it seems incredibly hard to find work.
