The Silly Season
The Silly Season is well and truly here.
My last entry left you at the Melbourne Airport where I was heading to Sydney for the weekend for a long awaited reunion with some of my favourite people. The weekend was a blast. I got to reunite with old friends from London over a beautiful Christmas lunch (Thanks again Pamela & Anna!) and stay with one of my fave Sydney couples Darren & Les for what would be a festive fueled gay old time!!
I love going back to Sydney and as expected there was lots of fun & laughter and not a lot of sleep. That is one of the best things about the lifestyle that I have lived over the last 10 years of my life, the amount of friends I have made from around the world. It can also be one of the hardest as I often feel at home in many places I visit, making it sometimes very hard to leave.
It has also been quite the season of Christmas Parties this year, having attended 4 work parties I feel like I have well and truly gotten into the spirit! Work has just been so super ridiculously busy over the last few months, it was really nice to get together with everyone and have a drink and dance to celebrate the end to another year.
As the days near closer to Christmas, it has been interesting being out and about in the shops and on the streets seeing the way people are behaving. I headed to Officeworks Wednesday to pick up some photos I had ordered over the weekend. Upon walking in I could see quite the line forming in the photo section, so I just hopped onto the end to wait my turn. Now like many of you I am sure, one of my favourite things to do is people watch. Usually it is something I would do when sitting down for a coffee or a drink, but standing in the line at Officeworks proved to be quite the vantage point for this entertaining activity.
Is it just me or can Christmas really bring out the worst in people?! One by one I saw people abusing the sales assistant about having to wait 'more than 20 minutes' for their photos or 'what do you mean I can't have my 6ft canvas printed before Christmas?!' I found it astonishing that people who looked refined and seemingly well mannered could behave in this way! I had to fight everything in me not to walk up to them and tell them to relax and maybe if they were more organised they could have had their prints before Christmas (however the part of me that didn't want to end up being punched in the face kept me well restrained).
People seem to be manic everywhere you go. No one seems to be patient, there is a lot more road rage and the spirit of Christmas seems to have gone out the window. We have become such an instant society, that if we can't have what we want straight away, we throw a tantrum!
As I sit here with my suitcase full of presents awaiting my flight back home to Adelaide, I can't help but feel excited and thankful about Christmas for all of the following reasons:
1. It's the first Christmas I have had with my family in 2 years.
2. It's the first Christmas I have ever had with my beautiful nephew Zachary.
3. It's the first Christmas in a long time that we have had with previously absent family and friends.
4. I get to spend Christmas with children and see the magic alive in their eyes.
and finally, I get to be with the people I love most in the world and who can blame me for being excited and thankful about that?!!
On that note, I will love and leave you with a little video that has made me smile this festive season. Sending love to all my friends out there in the big wide world. I wish you a Merry Christmas and hope to see as many of you as possible in the new year!!
